About Serenity

Serenity, classification Firefly, was purchased by Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) after the war between the Alliance and the Independents. Fighting for the Independents who lost the war, Mal was looking for something of his very own. He named his ship after the Battle at Serenity Valley, where it is believed the Independents lost the war. He began building a crew, first with Zoe Warren, who fought alongside him during the war. He then hired a pilot, Wash. His original mechanic was Bester, but Mal soon replaced him with Kaylee, who was far more adept at working with machines. Along the way he found Jayne Cobb, a mercenary sort. Renting one of Serenity's two shuttles was companion Inara. Looking for some extra money, Mal and the crew took on three passengers. Shepherd Book came on board and offered advice and help when he could. Fugitive Simon Tam and his sister River also became a part of Serenity.

Show creator Joss Whedon wanted Serenity to resemble a bird and a bug, like the crew was 'bugging' the alliance. Her design was meant to be graceful as well as practical. Joss and set designer Carey Meyer designed the ship as a full set, with colors ranging from very warm (the engine room) to very cold (the bridge).
